Day 3- November 5th

We left Auckland for Paihai early this morning for our first encounter with the kiwi experience bus. And what a great first encounter that was. The friendly driver picked us up nice and early from a spot outside our hostel, and then over the next few hours on the bus, various clipboards were sent around the bus with activities we could book onto over the next few days. The kiwi experience bus is definitely the stress free way to tour Australia. There were also 2 stops where we could get out to stretch our legs, and one happened to be an extremely scenic waterfall!

The kiwi experience also offers you the opportunity to book 1 nights guaranteed accommodation with their chosen hostel, however we had already booked our own accommodation which turned out to be the better option. For the same price, our hostel had smaller rooms (we had a 4 bed room to ourselves on the second night), cleaner facilities, a great kitchen and, the deal breaker, free wifi, which a lot of the base and nomad hostels (offered by kiwi experience) don't tend to have.

We met a German girl on the bus called Bridget who was travelling on her own, and we all ended up doing kayaking together in the afternoon. This was definitely a good decision. The sun was shining, the sky was blue, the sunburns were real. But we had an amazing time out on the water, singing and chatting and birdwatching. Our guide was really nice and relaxed as well and even brought tea and biscuits for our half way break, what a cutie!

Also, Emma tried to get out the canoe and climb up a ladder tied to a tree branch that was hanging over the watch which kind of failed, but it was entertaining.
The Pied Shag can dive up to 20m underwater.
After kayaking we were pretty tired, and headed straight to the supermarket to get food for our first home cooked dinner- beans, veg and rice. Standard. At dinner we met another German guy (they are everywhere!) who it turned out was doing the same tour as us the next day so we organised to go together. What a small world.
